Tree Dedication Commemorates Surrey Partnership
To commemorate the longstanding global partnership between NC State and the University of Surrey, both institutions gifted trees to each other, unveiled in a Tree Dedication Ceremony on March 31st. The event occurred on the lawn of Holladay Hall, with a ceremony officiated by representatives on two continents through video conference. Larry Nielsen, Professor of Natural Resources, represented NC State in the United Kingdom to present our gift of the tulip poplar tree. Vince Emery, Vice-Chancellor for International Relations, represented the University of Surrey to present their gift of a newly planted European beech tree at Holladay Hall. Memorial markers were unveiled simultaneously in front of attendees at NC State and Surrey, who gathered to participate in the ceremony across continents.
Provost Warwick Arden spoke about the significance of the partnership with Surrey, which officially began in 2006. The multi-faceted strategic partnership involves extensive research, student exchange and membership in the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN). The trees, planted on each campus, symbolize a global partnership with deep roots that is expected to thrive for decades to come.
The University of Surrey is a public research institution that specializes in science, engineering, medicine and business located in southeast England. It was recently named the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 University of the Year. To date, 21 NC State students have studied abroad at Surrey through the student exchange program and 17 Surrey students have studied at NC State. Numerous publications between faculty at both institutions have resulted from UGPN Collaboration Funding on topics ranging from algebra to veterinary sciences.
